What You’ll Love about a Dirty Chai?

  • This spiced latte is everyone’s favorite drink because it is very easy to prepare at home with just a few simple ingredients.
  • It combines the chai spice with coffee’s bold taste to give you that extra caffeine boost.
  • You can customize it according to your taste by altering the type of milk or the amount of espresso.
  • It is a nice, cozy, comforting drink that can be served hot or cold and saves you money at a coffee shop.

Ingredients

Milk: You can use milk to your liking. I prefer whole milk because it’s thick and creamy, which works best. If you want to use vegan options, you can go for coconut milk, oat milk, soy milk, etc.

Sugar: To add extra sweetness, use sugar, honey, maple syrup, or your favorite sugar alternative.

Espresso:  Use strong espresso as it adds boldness to this recipe.

Chai tea: You can use your favorite chai tea bag; I prefer tazo because of its strong and spicy flavor.

Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon, cardamom, or nutmeg for topping.

How to Make a Dirty Chai Latte?

Brew tea. If you are making a dirty chai latte with tea bags, you first need to brew the tea. Add the tea bag to a mug or heat-proof glass, pour the boiling hot water over, let it steep for 5 minutes, and gently press the tea bag to extract its flavors. If you want an extra creamy latte, you can substitute the water with steamed milk.

Brew espresso. If you are using sugar, brew the espresso right over it, as it will help dissolve the sugar. If you are using syrup, it’s not necessary. You can use strong coffee instead of espresso if you don’t have an espresso maker.

You can use sweetener as you like, and I recommend using one because it will add that little sweetness to your chai latte, which doesn’t have one.

Pour the brewed espresso into the mug of tea mixture.

Steam the milk in the microwave or over the stove on medium heat.

Froth the remaining milk with an electric frother or with a handheld frother.

Pour steamed milk into the latte and spoon the top with frothed milk. Sprinkle on nutmeg, cardamom, or cinnamon.

Variations

  • I have shared the basic recipe for making a dirty chai latte, but there are many simple ways or variations to customize it to suit your taste.
  • Iced Dirty Latte: You can replace the shot of espresso in your chai latte with the same amount of cold brew and use cold coffee and tea instead of hot.
  • Filthy Chai Latte: You can turn your latte into a filthy chai latte by using two shots of espresso instead of one.
  • To have the Dirty Hippie, replace the regular or dairy milk with soy milk, and use coconut milk to make coconut dirty chai. Regular Chai Latte: If you want a simple tea latte, follow the same recipe as written and skip the espresso. It will not be as strong as the one with espresso, but it tastes as delicious.

Does a dirty chai latte have caffeine?

Yes, a dirty chai latte has caffeine, as you will find in both the chai latte and espresso. But you can make it caffeine-free by using decaf chai and decaf espresso.

How much caffeine is in this?

According to Starbucks, their chai latte has 95mg of caffeine and 150mg in a shot of espresso, but the amount of Caffeine depends on the chai latte and espresso you are using.
